Calgary Public schools face 324 Job Cuts

The interesting part of this story is the revelation that the Calgary school board spends a significantly higher percentage of the school board budget on the top officials and school board administrators and less on the actual teachers who teach the students.

A Calgary Herald analysis found that the Calgary school board could save $10.5 million if it spent as little on administration as the most frugal of its Alberta counterparts.

The huge rent for the fancy new Calgary School board building is just one of the problems that the Calgary school board created for itself.

Read more about the Calgary Herald story: http://www.calgaryherald.com/Public+schools+face+cuts/4638763/story.html

The Calgary School board plans to continue support for ESL programming for students born outside of Canada.

English Schools in Canada

Good News about English Schools in Canada

Some of the best ESL English teachers in the world are Canadians and they teach English in Canada. The professional English language schools pay teachers from $25 to 45 dollars per hour, have an excellent proven curriculum, use a variety of educational materials, integrate computer CALL programs and audio-visual formats into the teaching process.

The ESL teachers are experienced, certified and have a Tesl Canada rating based on education and experience. The schools provide orientation, homestay, activities and field trips for students. Students can improve their English skills and enjoy their participation in these excellent programs. International agents earn from
3 to 15% commission from these higher quality accredited ESL English schools.

Bad News about English Schools in Canada

English schools that operate only to make profit pay the teachers $10 to 14 dollars per hour, usually have no curriculum - they just use workbook series, they do not have libraries, or computer labs or audio-visual resources.

These poor value schools have larger classes with fewer facilities and less teaching resources. Some of these schools operate un-accredited TESL programs and use inexperienced unsupervised unpaid student teachers for their programs. These sham English language schools should be avoided.

There are a large number of agency owned schools in Canada. Some large agencies from Korea, China and South America have opened "insta-schools" and place students into these "so-called exclusive private schools".

Many of these insta-schools are temporary offices that have no programs, no history of operations, unqualified management and uncertified teachers. International agents earn from 40 to 50% commission from their own sham schools. The sham English language schools should be avoided.

Parents and Students should make up a long series of questions to know exactly what to expect and receive for your hard earned tuition fees. Students should talk to international students who have attended the school. Students attend regular classes as a trial lesson. Students should use a professional independent education consultant before registering at any private English language school in Canada.

High School should Educate Students

"Ontario high schools will be able to provide every student with an education advantage," said Premier McGuinty.

The McGuinty government made a commitment to improve student success by setting graduation targets. By 2010, Ontario will graduate 85 per cent of its students, up from just 68 per cent when the McGuinty government took office.

Phase three of the Student Success Strategy will:

Add a new Specialist High-Skills Major to the Ontario Secondary School Diploma that will allow students to complete a minimum bundle of courses in specific high-skills areas such as arts, business, information technology, and construction and manufacturing

Introduce legislation that would, if passed, require students to keep learning in a classroom, apprenticeship or workplace training program until age 18 or until they graduate

Expand cooperative education programs through increased partnerships with business and community organizations

Create new dual-credit programs to allow students to earn several credits toward an Ontario Secondary School Diploma through college, apprenticeship and university courses.

Introduce a new coordinated effort and formal links between high schools and postsecondary destinations to help students reach higher.

"For too long, high schools have struggled to help students reach their potential through a one-size-fits-all model," said Kathleen Wynne.

"We want our province to succeed and for that to happen, we need our people to succeed - so dropping out when you turn 16 should not be an option," said Premier McGuinty.

TDSB adds 55 ESL Teachers to Toronto High Schools

As reported by many education organizations the TDSB has continualy "re-assigned" the Ontario Provincial ESL grants into overhead and maintainence budgets to make up for budget shortfalls.

This process has left many of the over 20,000 new Toronto immigrants over the last 3 years with no ESL teacher to help.

Using even simple math tells everyone that 10,000 (half of the students) divided by 55 teachers equals 181 students per teacher.

Good ESL classes are a 10 student to 1 teacher ratio. A teacher can teach 60 students each day - seeing all 181 students every three days.

Just to put everything into some sort of perspective it takes the average student about 2000 hours of instruction and 3,000 hours of self-study and practice to become fluent in English.

The "new" TDSB ESL initiative means that the new immigrants will need about (lets see 210 school days each year divided by three equals 70 ESL classes each year) (Now we take the 2000 hours and divide by 70) yes just over 28.5 years of high school classes to become fluent in English.

In a recent Toronto Sun Article the Toronto board's superintendent of programs
Karen Grose is quoted "Every single English language learner across the system now has a teacher assigned to them"

What we say is so what - the students really need 500 hours each year.

http://www.torontosun.com/news/2009/01/18/8060621-sun.html

The article also begs the question - why does the Ontario Provincial Government not moniter how this specialty ESL grant is spent - and why did the TDSB ignore the real educational needs of their students.

Public Education Costs will top 10,000 per student

Funding to meet the needs of Ontario students in Ontario public school boards is expected to increase to $18.8 billion for the 2008/2009 school year.

According to Finance Minister Dwight Duncan, the Ontario government's investment in the public school system has increased 24 per cent to about $9,821 per student since the Liberals took office almost five years ago.

More than $16 million in additional dollars is being promised to bolster programs for students at-risk of failing high school.

Other public education system investments include:

• $10 million for English as a Second Language in the 2008/2009 school year

• $67 million for special needs students in the 2008/2009 school year

• $32 million over three years for the Student Nutrition Program

• $2 million in 2008/2009 for Parenting and Family Literacy Centres

• $10 million in 2008/2009 to help students receive a well-rounded education through arts, music, physical education and other outdoor education programs

• $3 million in 2008/2009 to ensure environmental education and awareness is a part of lessons and school operations.

The children of visitors to Canada will have to pay the usual cost to taxpayers of the public education expenses. Most Ontario school boards will be charging 10,000 dollars and up depending on administration expenses and local costs.

Many school boards welcome citizens from other countries to attend Ontario public schools as it is a source of funding for the public schools and helps create jobs in the Canadian education industry.

The good news is that for every 6 foreign students that attend a Canadian public school - one education job is created and 2 service jobs. The bad news is that for every student that is falsly represented as a Canadian and put into the very expensive public school system the taxpayers have $10,000 stolen from them.
